Additional Information

Ethical editing

Ethical editing and academic integrity are important considerations for us. That is why we follow the Guidelines for Ethical Editing of Student Texts prepared by the Editors Association of Canada and the corresponding scope of editing work as outlined in the Professional Editorial Standards. Students should obtain written permission from their supervisor that outlines what the Editor may do.

Word count

When you select an editing package, we ask you to provide a word count. Since we only edit the main body text, when calculating the word count, do not include the front matter or what follows your conclusion in the back matter.
• Front matter includes title page, acknowledgements, dedications, table of contents, lists of figures, tables, and illustrations, etc.
• Back matter includes references (bibliography), appendices, glossaries, indexes, etc.

References

We do not edit or fact check references, citations, or appendices. With respect to in-text citations, if there are inconsistencies or errors found within the main body of text, we will flag them for your review. Check out these tips for references / citations.

Formatting

We will follow the formatting style of your preference. We are familiar with various styles including, but not limited to:
• American Psychological Association (APA),
• Modern Language Association (MLA),
• American Medical Association (AMA), and
• Scientific Style and Format (The Council of Science Editors (CSE) Manual for Authors, Editors, and Publishers).

Figures and tables

While the list of figures and tables are considered part of the front matter, if they appear within the main body of text, we will review them as part of our editing service for formatting and consistency.

Application for funding

We are more than happy to prepare a work estimate for editing services should you need to include one in your application for funding approval.

Scope of Editing

We perform the following types of editing for theses / dissertations, as per the Guidelines for Ethical Editing of Student Texts prepared by the Editors Association of Canada and the corresponding scope of editing work as outlined in the Professional Editorial Standards:

Copy edit

• We ensure correctness, accuracy, consistency, and completeness;
• We edit for grammar, spelling, punctuation, and usage;
• We will also check for consistency and continuity of mechanics and facts, including names and relationships;
• We edit tables, figures, and lists for format and consistency;
• We will develop a style sheet or follow one that is provided; and,
• We will correct or flag by query content that you may wish to check for accuracy.

Stylistic edit

• We make edits to clarify meaning, ensure coherence and flow, and refine the language;
• We will eliminate jargon, clichés, and euphemisms;
• We will adjust the length and structure of sentences and paragraphs to more effectively convey meaning;
• We ensure that transitions between sentences and between paragraphs are smooth and support the coherent development of the text as a whole;
• We establish or maintain the language level appropriate for the intended audience, medium, and purpose; and,
• We establish or maintain the tone, mood, style, and authorial voice or level of formality.

Structural edit

• We will assess the overall organization and content of the material to determine its suitability for the intended audience, medium, market, and purpose;
• We recognize and either query or resolve instances of questionable accuracy, inadequate research, imbalanced content, and lack of focus; and,
• We recognize and recast material that would be better presented in another form (e.g., number-laden text as a table).

References / Citations

References / citations provide your work with context and credibility while acknowledging the work of others. Properly referencing your sources maintains your academic integrity and avoids plagiarism.

You may find it helpful to use free reference / citation software such as Mendeley (often used for the sciences), Endnote (or Endnote Click), Zotero (often used for social sciences and humanities) or RefWorks.

Check with your supervisor or faculty for guidance on references / citations.

Your university’s library may also provide additional information regarding references / citations:
